U5L3A3 BNW Ch. 6 (RF)
For today’s assignment, follow these steps:
  1. Read (or listen to) Chapter 6.
  2. Answer the following questions on the “U5L3A3 BNW Chapter 6” discussion board by 11:59 PM tonight.
    1. In Chapter 6, Part I, Why is Bernard frustrated with Lenina?
    2. Why is Lenina frustrated with Bernard?
    3. How do you explain the differences in their points of view?
    4. Who do you think is behaving irrationally?
    5. At the end of Chapter 6, Lenina and Bernard were flying to the Savage Reservation, and “Ten minutes later they were crossing the frontier that separated civilization from savagery” (105). Huxley (seemingly deliberately) totally leaves out any indication of which side of the frontier is civilization and which is savagery. Now that you’ve read the book, when comparing the Savage Reservation to the World State, which do you consider civilized and which do you consider savage? Why?
    6. Initial post is required by 11:59 tonight.
    7. Respond to AT LEAST TWO of your classmates’ posts before 11:59 PM tomorrow, paying particular attention to questions d and e - NO LATE WORK WILL RECEIVE MORE THAN ½ CREDIT.

Let’s start at once.” (This is a quote from The Tempest btw.) When he says this, what is his tone, his attitude? On whose opinions is his attitude towards the World State based?

Friday, May 6, 2022
Standards: RL1, RL2, RL3, RL4, RL5, RL6, RL7, RL10, SL1, L1, L3, L4

  1. Today, you will read Chapters 9-11 of Brave New World and consider John’s shifting perception of the World State.
  2. Yesterday, you considered John’s tone and attitude in Chapter 8 when he first utters these words from The Tempest: “O brave new world that has such people in it.” What was his tone and attitude?
  3. John repeats these words in the middle of Chapter 11 (160). When he repeats these words, is his tone and attitude the same?
  4. You should be working on your final exam essay EVERY DAY now to get it done by the due date (Monday, May 16 by 11:59 PM). Be sure to look at the essay rubric. You should also be working on the study guide for the test. I have added an additional study guide (Brave New World Extra Study Guide.docx) to help you review important details. • What causes the gap in communication between John and Lenina? Why can’t they understand one another? Do they want the same thing or not?
  • In Chapter 14, why is John’s reaction to Linda’s death considered strange? How important is the individual person in the World State?

THAT Could NEVER Happen SP20.pptx

Discuss Ch. 3 and read Ch. 4.

Today we will discuss Ch. 3 and read Ch. 4. In Chapter 4, Part I, you see an Epsilon-Minus (the lowest caste) and the effect that the oxygen deprivation and alcohol treatment of the embryo has on the adult. He simply reacts to the world around him and has no memory retention at all. In Bernard, Benito Hoover, and Helmholtz Watson, you see the individuality that occurs within the Alpha class since they are conditioned less than any other caste.

1. Read Chapter 4.
2. As you read, consider these questions:
  1. How are Bernard and Helmholtz similar?
  2. How are Bernard and Helmholtz different?
  3. Note these quotes from Chapter 4, Part II: “Bernard gave his order in the sharp, rather arrogant and even offensive tone of one who does not feel himself too secure in his superiority” (64). “The mockery made him feel an outsider; and feeling an outsider he behaved like one” (65). “Slackly, it seemed to him, and with reluctance, the twin attendants wheeled his plane out on the roof” (65). “Was that a kind bestial derision that he detected in those blank grey eyes?” (65). Think about what Bernard intellectually knows and recognizes about the lower caste attendants. Where does Bernard’s problem with the world actually exist?

U4L3A6 Peer Review

For each paper, copy and paste the prompt questions into a reply and ANSWER THEM about the paper you read. Review TWO papers before midnight tonight.

Here are the prompt and questions:
Copy and paste the questions below into your discussion post for TWO papers; then, provide the answers to these questions based on the paper you reviewed. Please – be honest and helpful but also kind. Identify problems and make suggestions for how they might be fixed. Use the Mary Poppins technique (a spoonful of sugar): “You’ve done a nice job with your lead-ins, but you might want to check the punctuation for errors.” As a bare minimum, you must answer the questions. If you want to be awesome and super helpful, you can provide additional helpful information.
Questions to copy, paste, and answer:
Is the argument convincing?
What would make the argument more convincing?
Is the evidence thorough, merely adequate, or somewhat lacking?
Does the conclusion offer more than mere summary?
Does the essay explain how each quoted detail supports the point?
Does every quotation have a lead-in?
Are the lead-ins properly punctuated?
Does every quotation have a citation?
Does every detail that is not common knowledge have a citation?
Are the citations formed correctly?
Are the citations placed correctly?
What problems did you see with MLA format?
Does the essay conform to the rules of formality (no 1st/2nd pronouns, numbers, abbreviations, contractions)?
What did you see in this paper that is really cool or well done?
What did you see in this paper that really needs some additional work?

These charts make up your legal “cheat sheet” for the written portion of the Othello test. The more thorough your charts are, the higher your grade is likely to be on the test. You will be required to quote and cite evidence from Othello, but you will not be allowed to use the actual text. You will have access only to the information you have recorded on your charts. You will be allowed to use only HAND-WRITTEN charts on the test.
