In Bernard, Benito Hoover, and Helmholtz Watson, you see the individuality that occurs within the Alpha class since they are conditioned less than any other caste.
1. Read Chapter 4.
2. As you read, consider these questions:
- How are Bernard and Helmholtz similar?
- How are Bernard and Helmholtz different?
- Note these quotes from Chapter 4, Part II: “Bernard gave his order in the sharp, rather arrogant and even offensive tone of one who does not feel himself too secure in his superiority” (64). “The mockery made him feel an outsider; and feeling an outsider he behaved like one” (65). “Slackly, it seemed to him, and with reluctance, the twin attendants wheeled his plane out on the roof” (65). “Was that a kind bestial derision that he detected in those blank grey eyes?” (65). Think about what Bernard intellectually knows and recognizes about the lower caste attendants. Where does Bernard’s problem with the world actually exist?
