Today, we will experience several student versions of Grendel’s story. Then, you will read a professional author’s version of the same story, comparing and contrasting the two stories.
There is one assignment associated with today’s lesson, U1L5A6 Grendel’s Story:
For this assignment, you will read Chapters 11 and 12 from Grendel by John Gardner. Gardner is a professional author, and these two chapters are HIS version of the same story that you have just written – Grendel’s perspective of the battle between himself and Beowulf. You will read his story; then, you will analyze, in a comparison and contrast, the similarities AND differences between the student versions and the professional version.
PLEASE NOTE: The version of the text that is on the Internet provides MORE of the text than you need for this assignment. You will NOT read the entire text (unless you just want to). You are to read pages 151 to 174 (using the page numbers handwritten at the bottom of the document).
Steps in this assignment:
1. Read Chapters 11 and 12 in Grendel by John Gardner (pp. 151-174). Access the document at https://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&pid=sites&srcid=Y3NkbS5rMTIubWkudXN8bWlhaHxneDo3M2Q4MTMyNGM2MTZkN2Uw
2. In a properly MLA-formatted document (with parenthetical citations and a Works Cited entry), compare and contrast the student version(s) with the professional version. You MUST use specific, cited details from Gardner’s version to illustrate your points. See the Essay Guide for details on how to create parenthetical citations for a book (begins on page 26).
YOU WILL GET A GRADE FOR MLA FORMAT ON THIS PAPER AS WELL AS FOR THE ASSIGNMENT ITSELF.
