If you don’t have your own copy of the text, you can download “Brave New World text Landscape format.pdf” from the Brave New World folder on the Google drive.
If you would like to listen to Brave New World, go to the “On the Web” page of our class web site (https://www.kmcauthor.com/on-the-web.html) and scroll down to “Brave New World Audio Book.” You will see there a link to an audio version of the text and a list of the start time in the audio version for each chapter.
Preparing for the Summative Assessment
On the last day in the classroom, you were provided with two resources that will be helpful to you as you read Brave New World: a study guide and a lens tracking sheet. If you did not receive the printed copy, you can download the electronic copy from the Brave New World folder of the Google drive: “Brave New World Lens Tracking Sheet.pdf” and “LP_Brave_New_WorldFinal-pp 13-14 Study Guide.pdf.” I will not be taking these up; however, if you complete them as you read, you will do MUCH better on the final assessment over this book. In the final assessment, you will be asked to write an essay explaining the messages that are revealed when the book is viewed through one of the lenses we studied this semester: cultural, feminist, or Marxist – your choice.
For today’s assignment, follow these steps:
- Look at the presentation titled “BNW Intro SP20.”
- Read (or listen to) Chapter 1 of Brave New World and look at the presentation “BNW Ch 1 Notes” on the Google drive in the Brave New World folder. You might find it helpful to look at the presentation with the notes before you read the chapter. This is a very complex chapter with LOTS of details about the World State. It might help you to have some idea what is going on before you read the chapter, but it’s up to you, really, which you do first.
Contact: My normal online “office hours” will are from 10:30 until noon, Monday thru Thursday. If you have a question or concern, you may email me and I will get right back to you. If you email me outside of office hours, I WILL respond, but there might be a delay in the response since I do occasionally have to get out of this desk chair! 😊 If you need to speak with me, email me and we can set up a time to talk via phone or Zoom. You will need a password to access the Zoom meeting. I will give you the password when you set up the appointment.
Email: I have been corresponding with many of you via email, and I would like to make a request. When you email me, please sign your email (or at least make sure your first AND last name are both in your email address). I have received several unsigned emails that I wasn’t really sure who the sender was (Email doesn’t work like a text message – you need to tell me who you are rather than assuming I will know.). Who knows? I might have been answering questions for students who aren’t even mine! (I hope their teacher doesn’t mind! :-D).
Assignments: I will post the day’s assignments by 9:30 every morning.
Have a great day! Stay safe and healthy!
