Today, we will look at some stylistic devices that were common to Anglo-Saxon literature as well as review some elements that will make your writing more mature.

U1L4A1 CP Joining Clauses
Download worksheets 61 Fragments 12GE2013.pdf, 62 Fragments 12GE2014.pdf, 63 Runons 12GE2015.pdf and 64 Runons 12GE2016 .pdf (in the Grammar Worksheets folder on the Google drive) and complete it, writing your answers on a separate piece of paper or on the worksheet itself if you want to print it. We will go over this in class.

U1L4A2 Kenning Practice
View the Kennings and Alliteration.pptx presentation that is in the Anglo-Saxons folder of the Google drive.

Create one of each kind of kenning (three total) for the SAME thing (see the examples I created for Teacher). One of your examples MUST include alliteration.

This is due to Turnitin by 11:59 PM on Friday, Jan. 15.

NOTE: You can find pdf files of the specific pages that are referred to and all other necessary materials for today in the Google drive, Springboard Text folder, Unit 1 Videos & Handouts folder.
  1. Go to page 4 of your text and read “About the Unit” (U1L1.pdf, page 1). Then, consider how writers choose their subjects. Why do they write about their chosen subjects?
  2. Look up the dictionary definition of the word perception. On what does perception rely? Where does a person’s perception come from?
  3. Watch the video of the children’s book They All Saw a Cat.
  4. Consider these questions: On what does perception rely? Where does a person’s perception come from?
  5. Go to the Google drive, click on the Springboard Text folder. Open the Unit 1 Videos & Handouts folder. Open the presentation titled Optical Illusions. In each picture, you should see two different images. If you can’t, why do you think that is the case? What might help you see more than you are able to see? (I promise, there are two different things going on in every picture!).
  6. On page 6 of your text, read “Literary Criticism” (U1L1.pdf, page 2).
  7. Complete these assignments:

U1L1A1: It’s a Matter of Perspective
Our analysis of literature this semester will focus on perception. Our experiences have given each one of us a unique perspective. We have formed interests and dislikes, sometimes strong ones, based on our experiences.
1. Read the information about Reader-Response Criticism. You can find this information on page 19 of your textbook (U1 Reader-Response Criticism P19.pdf).
2. In a paragraph, identify some subjects that you have strong opinions about based on your experiences. The opinions you hold on these subjects are likely to affect the way you respond to texts that deal with those subjects.
3. Submit your response to Turnitin by 11:59 on Jan. 11.

U1L1A2 Reader-Response Criticism
1. Review the different types of Literary Criticism. You can find this information on pages 7 and 8 of your textbook (Literary Theory PP7-8.pdf).
2. In a paragraph, tell which literary criticism, based on the descriptions in the document, you are likely to find the most challenging. Why do you think you will find that particular perspective challenging?
3. Submit your response in Turnitin by 11:59 on Jan. 11.

U0L2A1 Email and Daily Procedure
1. First, review the Virtual Learning Expectations MC2.pdf and, if you weren’t present for class yesterday, view the Guidelines for the Virtual Classroom presentation (Guidelines for the Virtual Classroom.pptx).

2. Following the email guidelines presented in class yesterday (and in the presentation), send me an email listing the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places you should look each day at the beginning of class.

3. Then (also in the email), tell me what you should do (where you should go) if CTLS doesn’t appear to be working.

Make sure your email is formatted according to the guidelines and includes BOTH pieces of information.

You do not need to submit this assignment anywhere other than the email. You should send this email by 11:59 PM on Friday, Jan. 8.

U0L2A2: Plagiarism
Watch the brief video on plagiarism (Google drive, main directory). Then, in a document, tell me what you will need to do differently from what you’ve done before in order to protect against plagiarism.

Submit your answer in Turnitin by 11:59 on Friday, Jan. 8.

U0L2A3: Documenting a Source
1. In Resources, or on the class web site/Google drive, locate the Essay Guide (titled Your Essay Guide Ver. 11.pdf).

2. Use the Table of Contents in the Essay Guide to find the section titled “MLA Format: Step-by-Step Bibliographic Citations.” The page numbers in the Table of Contents of the PDF are hyperlinks that will take you directly to the appropriate section if you click on them.

3. In the first unit, we will be using an online version of Beowulf. Click this link to open the text in a new tab: https://www.bpi.edu/ourpages/auto/2017/9/13/42764661/beowulf__raffel_translation_.pdf

4. Use the step-by-step guide and create a bibliographic citation for the online version of the Beowulf text we will be using. Submit this citation in Turnitin by 11:59 PM on Friday, Jan. 8.
